Regarding recurring tasks, they refer you to another capability called Zapier (manages event based integration between apps). I have set that up and it works ok though I reckon that such a feature should be housed inside LeanKit itself. I mean it already has a Calendar component, I would expect recurring events to be an essential part of that. As it stands I depend on an external app... but hey, having just written this, the Calendar feature is not available in the free version of LeanKit so in that case it's a cool little integration.

And love the Apocalypse Now references... So the point of learning about the cues seems to be to trigger a realization that we or others are not in that place. And once we are aware we are not in that space, we can choose to explore what our obstacles are to getting there. As for other people getting there, it seems there is a difference between coaching and supporting others through obstacles versus manipulating them to act in a way that does not reflect where they are internally.

A comment about how communicating well might make 80% of the work of a project unnecessary: Living authentically might well make 80% of life's work disappear. I once read that in stable pre-currency cultures, the average person works 17 hours per week. That includes food gathering and preparation, dwelling maintenance, child care, etc. Most of the rest of the waking time is spent socializing or in creative activities (art, music, storytelling, tool building, etc.) Imagine what our culture would be like if it wasn't acceptable to use marketing/social engineering to manipulate others into wanting what they don't need. The things I do outside of business aren't tracked and sometimes happen at random. Part of what I value is the funny things that happen as a result. I bought my wife a necklace with a small diamond yesterday after going for a walk. The walk happened because I was tired and needed a break from work.

My approach - try to have more random discoveries. Be mindful enough to notice a good opportunity.Mark Levisonhttp://agilepainrelief.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18773592.post-13562116300080383672013-04-26T17:32:43.528-04:002013-04-26T17:32:43.528-04:00Thank you for the extremely impressive article. What a great reflective post on the kin...Hi David,

What a great reflective post on the kinds of lessons you learn through using Kanban. You say the things you've learnt aren't about Kanban, and that's exactly right. Because it's not about the process or the tool, but how it helps you see the patterns in your own behaviour and your own psychological response to your work.

And with work I mean both the personal and the professional, too. Like you, I love what I do professionally, and I tend to live a very interconnected life between the spheres of my life.

I've been writing about my own journey with Agile and Lean to manage life for almost 3 years now at my Scrumfamily blog. I hear echoes of some of the lessons I've learnt in a few of the points you made in this post.

Again, like you, I have always prided myself on sleeping 4 to 6 hours per night and moving mountains. But about 2 years into my journey, I eventually came to the conclusion that by continually exceeding the natural constraint that the need for sleep applies, I was actually robbing myself of quality of life. I wrote about this in Goodbye to Doing More with Less.

I also recognised your point about "up" and "down" time. I had a very similar experience, except that for me it was across weeks. It turns out I have a natural sine curve going in my psyche where I will push very had one week, and run a more average pace the week after. And the moment I try to push back against that cycle, I pay the price for it, because quality (work and my own happiness) starts suffering.

I really look forward to hearing more of your reflections. You're looking beyond the mechanics of the board, and that is ultimately what this approach is about.Maritza van den Heuvelhttp://scrumfamily.wordpress.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18773592.post-38578751362318365562013-03-11T20:49:05.355-04:002013-03-11T20:49:05.355-04:00Thanks Lonnie! Thanks Lonnie!Dave Priorhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09131283890162217818noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18773592.post-43996462436715628762013-03-05T12:41:20.876-05:002013-03-05T12:41:20.876-05:00Dave this was a great post!
